Nothing is more important than my characters. And then I do know how to direct actors, how to modulate them, get the best out of them. And I understand my material. I know how to help them navigate it, and when they deliver something magnificent, I know enough to realize it’s good and stay out of their way.
When I finish the script I want the script to be so good that I’m tempted to stop, I’m tempted not to make the movie, because if I just stop right now, I’m the winner.
I don’t ever want to fail, but I want to risk failure every time out of the gate.
