5/100 - See it

The Sisterhood of Night opened the 2015 POW Fest and it is one of my favorite movies of the year so far. Today it became available on every digital platform. I highly recommend it. The movie has a great payoff in the end and the night shots are all gorgeous. At the POW Fest screening the director - Caryn Waechter - talked about how long it took to make the movie happen... it was well worth the wait. Some people were pretty emotional during the Q&A session. I'd like to see more movies like this one. It's definitely so much more than it seems at first glance.

I spent some time on my old college campus today for a lunch meeting. A lot has changed. I can't remember what occupied spaces that are now home to new buildings. It's nice to see it all evolving.

However, this spot hasn't changed at all. One of my favorite spots on campus; a little bubbling fountain and a circle of benches. I've read many books there, and today I finished reading Skylight in that space.

Skylight by David Hare

Earlier this year I saw the NTLive production of Skylight. It is now back on the stage, this time on Broadway. This production stars Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy. I decided to read the script because the play is full of touching and complex dialogue. I wanted to read how it was all put together on the page and compare it to what I saw on the stage.

NTLive is such an amazing program. It allows you to see plays you'd likely never get the chance to see otherwise. Just last week, I saw Hare's most recent play - Behind the Beautiful Forevers. It is based on the book by Katharine Boo.

"Having a strong female character doesn't mean she's beyond suffering and fragility. There's a fearlessness. That to me is strong writing for women. It defies gender." - Tatiana Maslany in Adweek

"It was intended to be this exploration of nature/nurture, and a lead role like that may not normally go to a woman. Women aren't often the default in movies, TV, media—there's often very limited space for them. But it's exciting to mine these stories and see a show that puts women at the center of it." - Tatiana Maslany
