Reading about.... Midnight Special & Jeff Nichols

"My stated goal as a filmmaker is not to just tie up a plot for you. It's to transmit an emotion to you."

The Shot Caller Q+A: Midnight Special director Jeff Nichols

How Director Jeff Nichols Went From Rookie to Auteur in Just 4 Films

Absolutely enjoyed this movie and I'm loving reading about how it was made. It is great to read about someone talk about filmmaking as a way of thinking things through. Both interviews reflect the way that I think about movies and story. I'm definitely the type of person who watches a movie or tv show and then starts digging into how it was made and what decisions led to the final product.

" Endings don't have anything to do with what your movie is about. Now, there is an emotional climax, there's an emotional resolution that is 100 percent important. If I get that wrong, get your money back." -- jeff nichols

#YoutubeBlack

Loving seeing some how Youtube is shining the spotlight on popular Black Youtubers. One of my favorites is Naptural85. I've been following #YoutubeBlack hashtag for Youtube's first summit of Black content creators. There is so much good content on Youtube. It is so great seeing how it is possible to build your own media empire and build your own opportunities through social media. These days most of my media consumption is through Youtube, Netflix and most recently Amazon Prime.

Film Festival Selection (POW FEST!)

GREAT NEWS!

My documentary 'From Salem to the Salon' has been selected for the Portland Oregon Women's Film Festival (POW Fest)

'From Salem to the Salon' is the story of how a Portland-based salon owner changed Oregon state law. What starts as a desire to donate her hair-braiding skills to foster care children, quickly becomes a fight in Salem to fix a flawed system. Amber Starks fought the law and won.

The film will screen alongside other wonderful film made by women filmmakers from all over the world on Saturday March 5th at the Hollywood Theatre in NE Portland. Hope to see you there!!

What fun to come to the end of #The100DayProject on the same day New Horizons arrives at Pluto! I've probably been the most excited person in the newsroom about this story. It's a combination of history, technology and human ambition. We'd never been to Pluto, so we went. It took nine-years, but we did it anyway. How cool is that? 100 days is no nine-year journey, but I think that's pretty cool too.

It's Day 100 of #The100DayProject.

Even though 100 days is a long time, looking back it seems like a very manageable chunk of time. My project was to share something/blog every day for 100 days. It has been challenging at times to find something to share, but at the same time it has helped me focus in on the things that I find interesting. It has been a great way to keep track of what what I'm taking in.

This is the first time I've done #The100DayProject, but I'm already thinking of what I could do for a new one. I might even start some smaller, more focused daily projects.

If you want to be more creative, to come up with more ideas, and to have a more efficient creation process, schedule it.
Put creative time on the calendar.
Then show up every day.

Before you share a piece of work, step back and ask yourself if there’s a final, unique touch you can add to the mix. Those small details are what make your work stand apart from the rest.
